William Wallace
Commissioned for use as murals at The Wallace Monument.
The initial illustration shows events leading to the First Scottish War of Independence. Following the deaths of Alexander III of Scotland and his heir, Margaret, Maid of Norway, successor John Balliol reigned in the shadow of Edward I of England. Edward’s army invaded in 1295 but two years later Wallace lead the Scots to victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge. In 1305 he was betrayed by John de Mentieth and executed at Smithfield, London.
